Happy 2010!
Happy New Year!
I hope the new year and the new decade brings you all great opportunities, experiences, peace and happiness.
So, this is it. The end of my project of 'One photo per day for a year' for 2009. It's was a lot harder to do than I thought. There were many times throughout the year where I just felt like jacking it in, usually when it was late at night, I just got home from work and just wanted to sleep. Trying to find something worthwhile to photograph for 'my stupid blog' was definitely something I had to kick myself in the arse to do. I was so desperate for ideas that during 2009 I decided to 1) Get engaged 2) Get married and 3) Have a baby. That gave me enough photo material to make it to the end of the year.
Would I do it again? No. Definitely not (By the way I'm talking about the blog now, not marriage or having a baby). I'm so happy that today is the final day that I have to carry my camera around hoping to find something interesting to photograph or having that feeling near the end of the day knowing you still have to do a photo for that day. The reason I started the project was to use my camera more and that certainly happened, mission accomplished.
Doing the blog forced me to look at everyday things in a new way. To find interest in an otherwise seemingly uninteresting subject. A kind of inner hidden beauty if you like. I'm not saying I found it in everything I photographed, far from it, but at least I looked.
Chase Jarvis, that super funky Seattle based commercial self-promoting extraordinaire photographer, once said that 'there are at least 10 amazing photographs within 10 feet of you right now'. This is so true, but knowing how to find them is the tricky part. I found it incredible that on my walk home everyday from work, using the same route, how often I spotted something photographically interesting that I'd completely missed countless times before. It's kind of like hearing but not listening or my case, looking but not seeing.
So, if I was to say what I've learnt from my photo a day project it would be that there's no such phrase as 'there's nothing interesting to photograph'. There is ALWAYS something interesting to photograph, it's just a matter of seeing it.
I want to thank all those people who left a comment on the blog or to me personally and to those of you who have visited everyday or even only once or twice. I hope you found at least one or two photos that you liked or the odd post that you found mildly interesting. If so then I can count the project as a success and feel all warm and fuzzy inside :-)
To anyone thinking of doing a similar project for 2010, do it! It's hard work but very rewarding. Drop a link in the comments so people can follow your progress. I promise I'll subscribe ;-)
In the meantime, cheers and all the very best,
Dave
Over and out.
Dave, here I am again, as per my habit -- finding it hard to believe I won't have a place to look each evening during 2010 for an interesting perspective and words of commentary on Moscow life... Looking forward to your next project, bro. Bravo once again on this one! -- Jeffery

Thanks a lot mate! I'm kind of missing it myself to be honest. I guess that means I need some other project to do. I'll have to have a think. Cheers!

This still amazes me how you can take a picture of something moving which doesn't show you moving at all! You could just post a picture a day in 2010 having different words in front of you each day. Start with надувные!

what a lovely summary - you will be missed, your blog has made us feel that little bit closer and kept us up to date with what's happening in Dave's world!! Good luck for 2010 mister - can't wait to catch up again, hopefully later this year in Perth....big hug x

Maladets Dave, it was nice to see a pictorial diary over the year and what a year you picked? When's the exhibition???

Cheers for the comments everyone. Glad you enjoyed the blog as much as I did doing it. All the best for 2010!

Hey, Dave-o! It's been a little break from the blog for me in the last weeks due to the workload and then my long-awaited vacation. So coming to this picture and realizing the whole year's gone by was a surprise for me. And ditto everyone's comments that we'll miss your daily photo essays. But I'm sure some new photos will come our way shortly, but in a more relaxed way. Having started a similar project (though a way easier one) with 'iPhone pics of the day' I fully understand what you're talking about when describing how you go around looking for inspiration or an unusual angle to ordinary things. This is a great motivator! So all best to you and your family in 2010, and looking forward to seeing your new works on the interwebs!

Holy Crap - only just found this site.
Man, your photos really are incredible. You're probably bored of people saying that.
There are a photographers in my home town who constantly bang on about photography being cheapened as a result of digital cameras making it accessible to all the scruffs.
What a crock! You can have all the gear in the world and not get pics like these! Good to see someone using a talent.
Take care and happy 2011
Tom
